In January 2018, the Minnesota Department of Health began an investigation into a claim of neglect at Camilia Rose Group Home located in Coon Rapids, Minnesota. The allegations were that a caretaker from the failed to secure the sling strap of the mechanical lift being used to transfer the patient. As a result, the patient fell to the floor receiving a severe head injury resulting in hospitalization. In June 2018, this claim was substantiated.
Injuries from improper use of mechanical lifts are unfortunately common in American nursing homes and other care facilities. At times, the caretakers operating the devices may be improperly trained or safety procedures are not strictly followed. For the vulnerable and often elderly adults placed in these care facilities, a drop from these lifts can lead to serious injuries or death.
