The Minnesota Department of Health has completed its investigation of neglect and abuse concerns at the Boundary Waters Care Center in Ely, Minnesota. A complaint was filed with the Department alleging that: 1) several residents had bruising on their thighs due to staff treating residents roughly when providing care; 2) a resident was called a derogatory name for several weeks by an employee; 3) staff hid call lights from residents; 4) residents were not receiving dressing changes as ordered; 5) one resident had black bruising from his knee to his toes as well a fluid filled wound from the EZ stand; 6) catheter care wass not adequate 7) infection control procedures such as hand washing was not maintained; and 8) equipment was not kept clean. The Department found that the allegations were true and determined that the Boundary Water Care Center and its employees are responsible for neglect and abuse of the facility’s residents.
