USA Today recently published a short list of things to look for when deciding where to bring a loved one when they are unable to care for themselves.
Here are the important things to remember:
Stay close – “Once your loved one is in a nursing home, drop by frequently, sometimes without notice.”
Get references – “The CMS website provides a tool to help users compare nursing homes.”
Check on staffing – “Check the ratio of aides to patients. CMS recommends each patient have a daily minimum of 2.8 hours of nursing aide time and 1.3 hours with an RN or licensed practical nurse.”
Scope it out – “Visit each nursing home you’re considering and take notes.”
Consider costs – “To control costs, determine if it’s possible to keep your loved one at home longer through a combination of family help, health aides and adult day care.”
Sweat the details – “Ask about anything that could affect whether your loved one will be happy and well treated.”
It is extremely important to find the right nursing home for your loved one. However, accidents can still happen at any facility.
That’s where we come in. Take action if a loved one has been abused or neglected at a care facility. For a free initial consultation, contact the Kosieradzki Smith Law Firm online or toll free at (877) 552-2873 today.
