Putting your loved one in a nursing home is a tough decision to make. Many different factors contribute to the location of your relative’s eventual new home.
Michigan’s WOOD-TV brought in ombudsman Jerry Stevens to ease the process by offering some tips when selecting the proper facility.
He recommended looking online at the Medicare ratings of facilities, which are broken down by city, zip code, the name of the home and a star rating.
“In each of the star ratings, there’s a subset that you can go into so that you could see what issues were looked at,” said Stevens, “It will give you all of the detailed information regarding fire safety inspections, quality measures, nursing home staffing.”
Stevens also suggested making a surprise trip to a nursing home you may be considering. He said it’s important to ask the home what their turnover rate, especially among CNAs, is like.
In the end, though, you have to trust yourself to make a good decision.
“Gut reactions, tend to be pretty accurate,” Stevens said.
