June 15 is now “Elder and Vulnerable Adult Abuse Day” in the state of Michigan.
The new dedication is part of a large effort to curb abuse in the region, as there are an estimated 80,000 elder abuse victims in Michigan annually, according to Hillsdale.net.
Last week, Michigan’s governor signed a 10-bill package to “protect Michigan’s senior citizens and vulnerable adults.”
The new measures encourage the reporting of elder abuse and similar incidents, as well as create stiffer punishments for offenders in abuse cases.
“The abuse of seniors and vulnerable adults is one of the fastest-growing crimes in our state,” said Governor Rick Snyder, “and law enforcement agencies will now have better tools to help protect potential victims from financial and physical abuses.”
