By June 19, 2012 No Comments

North Carolina’s Rockingham County held its second annual Elder Abuse Awareness Day last Friday in an effort to make the dangerous issue more visible to the public.

Seven speakers told horrific stories from their time in private homes and nursing facilities, and many experts showered discouraging statistics upon those in attendance.

There were 20,000 cases of abuse reported in North Carolina last year, including 228 in Rockingham County, where the even took place.

Marijane Webb, a detective for the county sheriff’s office, said there are 14 cases of abuse that go unreported for every case that is brought forth.
