Neglect

Claims of neglect at Texas nursing home

By June 5, 2012 No Comments

When Mary Arias visited her father at Retama Manor nursing home, she was shocked to hear the stories he told her about the quality of care at the facility.

76-year-old Jesus Valdez, who is paralyzed on the left side of his body, is restricted to a wheelchair. This didn’t stop a nurse from forcing Valdez to rinse out his mouth by himself—an impossible act, given his state—and ignoring his need for water.

According to a story from Pro News 8, Arias also witnessed other cases of neglect at the facility.

“The people working there, if they don’t want to work there changing diapers and paying attention to the older people, well then, work somewhere else,” she said.

The home denies that they have treated Valdez improperly, but Arias worries about other facilities across the country as well.

“So what about all the other people who cannot even move that their in the wheelchair, just crying out to help and to be changed,” she said, “I mean there’s a lot of things going on there that should be checked out.”
