Abuse and frustration in Florida nursing homes

By June 1, 2012 No Comments

TC Palm recently posted a great article that probes the depths of big nursing home problems in the Sunshine State.

It outlined several incidents, including a man suffering from facial cancer who was purposely hidden from inspectors so they didn’t see the extent of his deterioration and mistreatment. Another time, a 90-year-old woman had to literally drag herself to get assistance after a vascular surgery.

Many families in the state feel powerless to help their elderly loved ones when something goes wrong at a facility. They don’t want to complain and be labeled as “troublemakers” by their respective nursing home, because the facilities can, by law, discharge any patients within 45 days’ notice.

In Florida, there is no state-ordered inspection system that focuses on solving problems in eldercare. While there are more options in Minnesota, there are still numerous difficulties with the system in place, and elder abuse is still common.

That’s where we come in. Take action if a loved one has been abused or neglected at a care facility.  For a free initial consultation, contact the Kosieradzki Smith Law Firm online or toll free at (877) 552-2873 today.
