After three years, The Republic reports that two workers at a Placerville, Calif. nursing home have been charged with felony elder abuse.
Johnnie Esco, at the time a 77-year-old woman supposed to be under close supervision, passed away in 2008 after losing a bout with pneumonia. Doctors discovered unexplained bruising on Esco’s body after her death, as well as severe fecal impaction, a sign of neglect.
The former director of nursing at the facility was arrested two weeks ago, and a warrant was issued for a 38-year-old former worker in El Dorado Country.
While Esco’s case was initially treated as unimportant by the attorney general’s office, the efforts of her husband, Don, 81, and local prosecutors helped bring justice to the Placerville situation, one that displayed obvious neglect from the nurses involved.
