Suspicious Nursing Home Deaths Going Unreported

By March 22, 2012 No Comments

The Detroit Free Press released a disturbing report concerning nursing home deaths earlier this month.

The newspaper found “at least 33 nursing home deaths in a three-year period in which reports show there were blunders, oversights, mismanagement or short-staffing in the hours or days before the resident died.”

Furthermore, the report states, “In at least eight of those cases, medical examiners weren’t even called. In one—where an 82-year-old man fell, cracked his head and died of bleeding inside his skull—the case wasn’t reported to the state, either.”

These are particularly worrying statements, because the state of Michigan requires deaths to be reported when they are “violent, unexpected or medically unattended.”
