NeglectPhysical Abuse

80-Year-Old Fatally Beaten in Chicago Nursing Home

By March 30, 2012 No Comments

The Chicago-Tribune reports that the family of Anibal Calderon has sued Oak Park Healthcare Center after the patient’s death in February.

Calderon was assaulted by a 66-year-old resident with a “violent criminal background,” and a nurse found the victim unconscious in the Alzheimer’s ward. He died two days later from brain injuries and blunt head trauma, and the death was ruled a homicide.

Now, the family believes that better staffing could have saved Calderon’s life. The lawsuit alleges “Oak Park Healthcare violated federal and state nursing home regulations by failing to protect Calderon from abuse and neglect.” It also states “the facility failed to provide appropriate supervision,” among other similar allegations.
