Nursing Home Staff Member Puts Patient In Head Lock

Nursing home residents deserve to be treated with dignity, not put into head locks.  Patients suffering from Alzheimer’s and dementia deserve caregivers who are competent to care for them.  That’s not the kind of care that an 88-year old patient at a Georgetown, Texas care facility received  Rather, the nursing home staff member used force to get him to comply during a routine toilet trip, bruising his arms, giving him chest pain and putting him in a head lock, according to a report by KXAN News in Austin.

When caring for combative patients with Alzheimer’s and dementia, the caregivers employed by the nursing home must be skilled and educated about the disease and about the particular patients under their care.

The company licensed to operate the nursing home has the responsibility to hire competent personnel and to make that there are sufficient staff on duty for each shift, all day every day.  When these companies skimp on this basic requirement, they put the health and safety of the vulnerable residents in their facilities at risk.
