Minnesota has been ranked as one of the worst states in the country for investigating complaints of abuse occurring in care facilities, the Star Tribune reports. Federal guidelines specify that least 90% of abuse complaints investigated, a mark that the Minnesota Health Department has failed to meet in each of the past four years.
In fact, as the Star Tribune reports, reviews from the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services show that the state failed to do its job correctly in 40 percent of cases in 2008 and 2009. Darcy Milner, Director of Minnesota’s Compliance Monitoring Division, stated, “I know we’re not perfect.” She also acknowledged that Minnesota’s current system is not geared towards punishing violators.
