Nursing Home Cited in Choking Death

DL Online reports that the Bethesda Heritage Center Nursing Home has been cited by the state of Minnesota for neglect following the death of one of its residents.  The resident, who had chronic pulmonary obstructive disease, was not to be fed any hard vegetables.  The nursing home staff nevertheless fed hard vegetables to the resident.  The resident began to choke, and an aid performed the Heimlich maneuver.  The resident died later at the emergency room.  State investigators have found that the nursing home had no reliable system in place for determining which foods the different residents can and cannot eat.
