New St. Paul Elder Abuse Police Unit

The Star Tribune reports that the city of St. Paul, Minnesota has instituted a new department within its police force entirely devoted to the investigation of elder abuse.  Currently the department consists of only one full-time officer, but the city has plans to expand it as the state’s elderly population grows.  The officer said in an interview that he had seen cases of elder abuse increase in the past year.  Because crimes against the elderly are so difficult to investigate and so often go unreported, the police chief said that a specialized unit is the only way to properly handle them.
