Assisted Living Patient Left in Hot Van Dies

The Philadelphia Inquirer reported on July 28, 2010 that an autistic 20-year-old man died in a van after his caregivers left him inside after a trip to an amusement park. He was a resident of Woods Services, a Pennsylvania assisted living facility for people with special needs. When the group returned from the amusement park at about noon, the driver parked the van and returned the keys to the office and completed her shift at 3:00 p.m.  It wasn’t until an hour later when it was time to give him is medication the man was noticed missing.  Staff searched the premises until they found him dead in the van.  He had been inside for 5 hours.  The temperature in the van would have rapidly risen to 125 or 130 degrees within an hour, authorities say.
