State Shuts Down Dangerous Nursing Home. July 21, 2010 Over a hundred residents of a Jacksonville, FL nursing home will soon be relocated, because the state is shutting the home down. It is a rare move for a home's license to be revoked, but this February, the Glenwood Nursing Center was declared by the state of Florida to be placing its residents in immediate jeopardy and to be a generally unsuitable place for the elderly to receive care. The state investigation reported instances of dangerous falls, unsupervised residents abusing one another, even a resident who wandered away unnoticed and made it into the next county before being found. The nursing home reportedly knew about these problems but repeatedly failed to intervene or develop plans of correction. In addition to being shut down, the nursing home company faces a $25,000 fine. Unfortunately, dangerous sub-standard nursing care is a too-common reality. $29 Million Verdict Upheld in Nursing Home Neglect Case. July 20, 2010 On July 14, 2010, a Sacramento, CA trial judge upheld the verdict from a case regarding the death of 79-year-old female nursing home resident. The resident suffered a fall at the nursing home and broke her hip. The nursing home let the fracture go undiagnosed for days and the resident finally died from an infected bedsore. The owner of the nursing home also owned 32 other facilities in the state. The lawsuit revealed that nursing home owner chronically understaffed its facilities and that the staff at this particular nursing home appeared "overworked, untrained and uncaring." The court awarded $800,000 to the resident's family for her pain and suffering plus an additional $28 million in punitive damages. The nursing home corporation disputed the verdict, but the trial judge said in no uncertain terms, "This was an overwhelming case. It does not deserve to be retried. That would be a travesty." When a nursing home is understaffed, all of the residents suffer. Pressure sores and fall injuries are can be prevented when nursing homes are properly staffed. But putting staff on the floor costs money and many nursing homes decide to place their priority on the bottom line rather than on proper resident care.
